Shipbuilding – International Maritime Organisation (IMO)

Non-combustibility

The FTP Code is intended for application by the administration and the competent authority of the flag State where products for installation in ships, which fly the flag of that flag State, are approved in compliance with the fire protection regulations of the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea in its respectively applicable version. The FTP Code is to be applied by the testing laboratories where products are tested and evaluated in accordance with this Code. Appendix 1 of this Code shows the prescribed test procedures which are to be used when testing products as the basis for an approval (including the renewal of an approval) with the exception of the regulation stipulated in Section 8. The test procedures specify the test methods as well as the recognition and classification criteria.

Standard Title of the Standard
FTP Code 2010,
Appendix 1, Part 1
Non-combustibility test
- If it is required of a material that it be
non-combustible then this is to be determined
in compliance with this part.
- Should a material pass the test in accordance
with Section 3 then it is to be classified as
noncombustible even if it consists of a composition
of organic and inorganic component parts.

Smoke and toxicity
Standard Title of the Standard
FTP Code 2010, Appendix 1, Part 2 Smoke and toxicity test
If it is required of a material that at increased temperatures it does not generate excessive
amounts of smoke and toxic substances or
lead to toxic hazards then the material must
fulfil the requirements of this part.

Surface flammability
Standard Title of the Standard
Code 2010,
Appendix 1, Part 5
Test on surface flammability
(test for surface materials and
undermost deck coverings)

- If it is required of a product that it has a fire
retardant surface characteristic then it must
conform to this part.
- If it is required of the undermost deck coverings
that these are flame retardant then they must
conform to this part.
- If a product of a surface material is approved on
the basis of a test on a test object applied to a
non-combustible and non-metallic carrier material
then the product is approved for use on a
non-combustible and non-metallic carrier material
with a similar or higher density (similar density can
be defined as a density which is equal to or greater
than 0.75 times the density used during the test)
or with a greater thickness if the density is more
than 400 kg/m³.
If a product is approved on the basis of an obtained
test result after being applied to a metallic carrier
material (e.g. a thin coat of paint or plastic foil on
steel plates) then that type of product is approved
for use on a metallic base plate with a similar or
greater thickness (similar thickness is a thickness
which is equal to or greater than 0.75 times the
thickness of the metallic carrier material used
during the test).

Textiles
Standard Title of the Standard
FTP Code 2010,
Appendix 1, Part 7
Test of perpendicular hanging textiles
and foils

If it is specified for curtains, drapes and other
hanging textile products that they exhibit a
resistance to the spread of flame which is
not less than that of a woollen fabric with
a mass of 0.8 kg/m² then they must conform
to this part.

Upholstered furniture
Standard Title of the Standard
FTP Code 2010,
Appendix 1, Part 8
Test of upholstered furniture
If it is specified for upholstered furniture
that they exhibit a resistance to ignition
and spread of flame then the upholstered
furniture must conform to this part.

Bedding
Standard Title of the Standard
FTP Code 2010,
Appendix 1, Part 9
Test of bedding
If it is specified for bedding that it exhibit
a resistance to ignition and spread of flame
then the bedding must conform to this part.
