Cables

The test procedures serve the evaluation of the insulation behaviour, the vertical spread of flame, the heat release, the development of smoke and dropping particles from vertically arranged, bundled electrical or optical cables or lines under stipulated conditions in the event of fire. In this respect, besides the various test procedures for the evaluation of the spread of fire from vertically installed, bundled electric or optical cables, there are also test procedures for the behaviour of a single core line, a cable, a line or a fibre optic cable on vertical flame propagation under fire conditions and test procedures, for example for measuring the smoke density of cable and electrical lines as well as the gases resulting from the burning of the cable materials and insulated lines as the most diverse evaluation criteria.

Classification of building products and types

A classification of the fire behaviour of electric cables takes place on the basis of DIN EN 13501‐6. This European Standard establishes the procedure for classifying the fire behaviour of electric cables. For the application of this European Standard, the term "electric cable" covers all heavy current, control and communication cables including glass fibre cables.

Classification for materials and components of rail vehicle construction (railway applications)

Part 2 of EN 45545 establishes the fire protection requirements on materials and components for rail vehicles in accordance with EN 45545‐1. The operational and design categories in accordance with EN 45545‐1 are used to determine the hazard level (HL) to which the requirements of the classification system are orientated. For each hazard level, Part 2 specifies the test methods, test conditions and requirements on the fire behaviour test.
